Unionization at WSU

Detroit, at one time the automotive capitol of the world, has always been a labor town. Labor needs workers, and workers usually need rights and a say in their job to do it well. Detroit homes many unions, including the UAW since its inception in 1935. Wayne State University is no exception.

WSU’s first labor union, a chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), started as an advocacy chapter in 1930 and officially formed a union in 1972. The most recent unionization at WSU happened last year. Resident Advisors United was created by student workers and officially recognized last April.
